Darrell Horst's Bird Room

Darrell is located in No. California. This outdoor aviary is what Darrell calls his bird retirement home. Canaries not used for breeding are placed here. It's currently empty. An enclosure is at one end and double door entry at the opposite end. It's double wired with 1/2" x 1/2" wire on the inside and mosquito netting on the outside. Heavy plastic sheeting is placed on most of the panels during the winter.

Darrell's wife Liza is a strong supporter and helper in this hobby.
All of Darrell's breeding cages are hand made. These pictured were purchased from Ella Galik. Her husband made them as some of her first breeding cages. Water containers pictures have been switched to the "Water Buddy" bottle recently.

Flight cages for the waterslagers.
Darrell plans to breed about 30 waterslagers from 4 males and 8 hens. Breeding cages pictured above are opposite these flight cages.
This room is approimately 6' x 12'. It's a shared laundry / pantry / bird room.

These 12 breeder cages have slide out dividers that can be removed to provide 6 flight cages. The fronts are made of fiberglass material. No, those are not green waterslagers... These cages are currently used for Darrell's American Singer song canaries. Darrell made these cages a couple of years ago with plans from Don Perez. This room is approximately 14' x 14'.
